Packing List for the Perfect Summer Day on Reiteralm & Fageralm

© Reiteralm Bergbahnen

A successful day in the mountains does not start with the first step on the hiking trail or the first descent on your bike. It starts at home while packing. We have all been there: the sun is shining, the view is breathtaking, but the sunscreen is still in the car. Or the weather suddenly changes, and the rain jacket was left at home.

To make your summer day in Schladming-Dachstein relaxed, safe and enjoyable, we have put together a practical packing list for hiking and biking on Reiteralm and Fageralm. From suitable clothing and snacks to useful extras for families, you will find everything you need for a great day in the mountains.

Important: Before you start your tour, check our webcams & the current mountain weather. Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Even on warm summer days, it is better to pack one extra layer and be well prepared. Before you start your journey, you can check the weather on Reiteralm TV on your TV.

Two Mountains, Endless Summer Experiences

Reiteralm and Fageralm offer a wide range of summer activities for active and relaxed days in nature. Depending on whether you are planning to hike, bike or enjoy a family day out, your packing list should be adjusted accordingly.

Reiteralm: Hiking, Biking & Mountain Adventures

Reiteralm is perfect for everyone who wants to experience an active summer in the mountains. Whether you are planning a scenic hike, a sporty tour or a biking adventure on the Reiteralm Bike Trails, functional clothing, good shoes and enough food and drinks are especially important.

For longer tours, the proper layering is highly recommended: a breathable shirt, a light midlayer and a rain or wind jacket will help you stay comfortable in sunshine, wind and changing mountain weather. Bikers should also make sure to bring a helmet, gloves, a water bottle and a small repair kit.

Tickets for the cable car can be purchased on-site at the staffed ticket office, at the ticket machines, or through the Online Shop. On weekends (Sat & Sun), the Preunegg Jet begins operating as early as 8:00 a.m.

Fageralm: Nature, Family Time & Relaxed Mountain Moments

On Fageralm, the focus is on nature and relaxed mountain experiences. Families, leisure hikers and everyone who prefers a quieter day in the mountains should pay special attention to sun protection, snacks, enough drinks and comfortable clothing.

For children, the packing list can be a little longer: spare clothes, small motivational snacks, wet wipes, a sun hat and a light jacket can make a family trip much more relaxed.

The cable car at Fageralm is not in operation during the summer! However, the hiking area is easily accessible by car via Fageralmstraße. Being able to drive your own car right up the mountain is a big advantage for families: kids can stay in the car until it’s time to start hiking, and the car is quickly accessible again for the trip home.

What Should You Pack in Your Hiking or Bike Backpack?

In addition to classics such as a water bottle, sunscreen and rain jacket, a few small helpers can make a big difference. Good preparation for your summer day in the mountains includes:
  1. Safety first: For hiking, good shoes, enough water and a charged mobile phone are essential. For biking, a helmet, gloves and a small repair kit should always be included.
  2. The layering principle: Even in summer, it can get cool or windy in the mountains. Several light layers are more practical than one thick jacket. This allows you to adjust flexibly to temperature and weather conditions.
  3. Do not forget sun protection: UV radiation is particularly strong in the mountains. Sunscreen, sunglasses, headwear and lip balm belong in every backpack.
  4. Bring enough food and drinks: Whether you are planning a relaxed hike or a sporty bike tour, your body needs energy. Water, muesli bars, fruit or nuts are ideal companions on the go.
  5. Digital preparation: Save important information on your smartphone before your trip. This includes your route, weather forecast, webcams, opening times, emergency numbers and information on how to get there.

Hiking Packing List or Biking Packing List: What Is the Difference?

For hiking, the focus is on good footwear, weather protection and a comfortable backpack. For biking, there are a few additional essentials: helmet, gloves, repair kit, water bottle, bike lock and, for e-bikes, a fully charged battery.

For both activities, the same rule applies: plan your tour realistically, keep an eye on the weather and take a little more water than you think you need. Especially for family trips, it is worth planning enough breaks, snacks and small extras for children.

Your Digital Companion for a Summer Day in the Mountains

In addition to your physical packing list, digital preparation is also important. Check our webcams, the current mountain weather and information on open lifts before your trip. It is also a good idea to save your route directly on your smartphone so that you are well informed while you are out and about.

Whether you are hiking on Reiteralm, enjoying an active biking day or planning a relaxed family trip on Fageralm, the right preparation will help you make the most of your summer day in Schladming-Dachstein.

We wish you a wonderful day in the mountains, unforgettable views and many special summer moments on Reiteralm and Fageralm!
